2026 Rasuwa-Nuwakot floods Nepal

On the morning of August 26, 2026, a catastrophic flash flood began affecting the Nepal–China (Tibet) border area. Floodwaters flowed downstream into the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli rivers, sweeping away villages along the route, killing hundreds of people, and damaging infrastructure along a flood pathway approximately 200 km long.

Missing: 1,000+

Many towns and villages along the river route were swept away by the flood, reportedly killing hundreds of people and leaving 700+ people missing, including 400+ foreign tourists. Hundreds of others were injured.

Approximately 80 concrete and suspension bridges, 13 hydropower stations, 1,000+ vehicles, many road segments were also swept away. Rescue and relief operations are underway mainly by helicopter.

Route

➣The flash flood originated on the Tibet side of the border at around 8:37 a.m. USGS later classified the event as "landslide-generated seismic event" with "M5.2 landslide", occurred on 8:37:10 Nepal time. 

➣It surged in Nepal through the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa District. 

➣It then flowed downstream into the Trishuli River, affecting Rasuwa, Nuwakot, and Dhading districts.

➣ Ultimately, the flood water and debris reached the Narayani River in Chitwan District before continuing into Bihar, India.

Khalti Basti - Riverside settlement affected

Sole - Affected along the river corridor

Betrawati -Major downstream impact; houses/bridges damaged

Trishuli Bazaar - Major town; extensive inundation and destruction

Battar - Affected by downstream Trishuli flooding

Ruwakot - Riverside settlement affected

Majhimtar - Riverside settlement affected

Dhading District: 

Galchhi - Major downstream town; bridge/road damage

Gajuri - Flooding and damage along Trishuli

Malekhu - River rose above danger level; flooding around market

Chitwan District: 

Muglin - Downstream warning/impact; substantially less destruction than upstream


Response

Rescue and relief operations are underway, with authorities and emergency responders working to locate missing people, evacuate affected communities, and provide assistance to those impacted by the disaster.
